MMC Binders
Metal Matrix Composites find use in a variety of industries ranging from aerospace and electronics to automobile and semiconductors. By far, the majority of these composites are composed of an aluminum matrix. Although many fabrication methods exist for MMCs based on an aluminum matrix, most processes require that external pressure be applied to consolidate the composite. Fabrication of such composites is thus complicated and costly. KDT polysilazane resins allow for a pressureless-infiltration fabrication process of aluminum MMCs when used as binders for ceramic powders that are used as reinforcements in MMCs. As little as 6 wt. % of a KDT polysilazane results in a preform of exceptional strength and durability at temperatures as high as 850 °C. Alternatively, strong performs for pressure-assisted processes can be attained
Benefits of Using KDT Polymers as MMC Binders:
- Allows for pressureless infiltration for MMCs
- Fabrication processes up to 7 x’s faster
- Very strong performs
- Near-net-shape fabrication of MMCs
