Ceramic Fiber Precursor
KDT is prepared to fill the growing demand for a U.S. source of high performance ceramic fiber. To date, sources of such fiber are found mostly in asia. Because these materials find utility in a variety of sensitive military applications it is becoming essential that the U.S. has its own supply line of ceramic fiber. For U.S. military and defense related applications KDT offers KDT Ceraset Ultra Polysilazane as a ceramic fiber precursor.
KDT Ceraset Ultra Polysilazane is a solid polysilazane that softens upon heating and can be melt- or solvent-spun into fiber. Fibers spun from KDT Ceraset Ultra Polysilazane are readily shape stabilized prior to pyrolysis by various methods including oxidative, chemical, radical- or UV-initiated processes. The resulting fibers can then be pyrolyzed to silicon carbide, silicon nitride, silicon carbonitride, or silicon carboxynitride by heating to temperatures greater than 1,000° C. The final ceramic phase is dependent upon the pyrolysis atmosphere. The ceramic yield as measured by thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) is 84 % in a nitrogen atmosphere.
KDT Ceraset Ultra Polysilazane was specifically designed for use in ceramic fiber fabrication, but unique physical and rheological properties allow its use in other high performance ceramic applications where very high ceramic yield and processibility issues are important.
Benefits of Using KDT Ceramic Fiber Precursor:
- Domestic source of ceramic fiber material
- High thermal stability
- Excellent mechanical properties
- Easily processed
- Ceramic composition can be controlled
