Background
The technology in place at KiON Defense Technologies, Inc. (KDT) dates back to 1983 and began with early research and development in preceramic polymers. Ongoing research in the field of polysilazanes lead to break-through manufacturing technology in 1999 with the discovery of a liquid ammonia process for the large-scale manufacturing of polysilazanes. At that point it became apparent that polysilazanes could be commercialized in high volume applications.
KiON Corporation was formed in 2002 to manufacture, market, and further develop polysilazanes made by the liquid ammonia process. In 2006 Clariant Corporation, a Swiss based company, purchased the outstanding stock of KiON Corporation and, as part of that transaction, granted an exclusive license to KDT for all U.S. Military and Defense related applications utilizing KiON polysilazane technology. KDT is an independent U.S. company that has no relationship with Clariant, KiON Specialty Polymers other than the licensing agreement. In addition to polysilazanes, KDT has also developed other polymers designed for ceramic and coating applications, for sale to industries world-wide in both the defense and commercial markets. KDT technical personnel include key individuals who were involved in the initial discovery phase involving KDT polysilazanes and also in the subsequent development of the current technology, with know-how dating back to 1983. Ongoing technical support is provided to all customers, with an emphasis on customized applications development in the coatings and composites areas.
